The Flying Fish Festival Returns to Catalina Island – May 30th to June 2nd

Returning to Catalina Island for the sixth straight year is Catalina’s own Flying Fish Festival for four fun-filled days beginning May 30th and running until June 2nd.

To kick off the celebration, the festivities start with the ninth annual Taste Around of Avalon on May 30th.  The event runs from 5 to 9 pm.   “Taste cards” for this one-day event gives participants an opportunity to sample specialty dishes from some of Avalon’s finest culinary restaurants.  Following this savory and sweet feast, participants can vote for their Best Taste of Food and Best Taste of Drink.  The Taste Around of Avalon tickets can be purchased at Wrigley Stage on the day of the event.

Other Flying Fish festival events include boat races, a boat-building competition, live music and guided tours of the Wrigley Memorial and the Botanic Garden free of charge.  Of course, there’s plenty do to for the children from fish and ocean crafts to picture-taking with Gil, the Flying Fish Festival mascot.

Every year, from late May until September, flying fish are spotted off the shores of Catalina Island.  Soaring from the depths of the ocean blue 30 feet into the air and gliding as far as a quarter mile, these fish put on a resplendent show.  And if you think that’s something to say in the light of day, it’s even more dazzling at night when the fish are lured by the lights of passing vessels.

Sponsored by the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, the Flying Fish Festival is sure to please native islanders and visitors alike.
